Linda Ronstadt Won’t Make Any Money From ‘The Last Of Us’ Using Her Song ‘Long, Long Time’

Depending on your level of familiarity with how publishing rights work in the recording industry, it may surprise you (or not) to learn that despite the resurgence of interest in Linda Ronstadt‘s 1970 hit “Long, Long Time,” the retired singer won’t make any money from the licensing that prompted it.

According to Billboard, streams of the song on Spotify jumped nearly 5,000% after the third episode of HBO’s sci-fi thriller The Last Of Us aired. The episode prominently featured the song, with two different characters singing it during a pivotal moment and two other characters listening to it as the episode ends. Meanwhile, on-demand streaming across all services increased from 8,000 the day before the episode to 149,000 the day after.

So, why won’t Ronstadt get paid for all that?

Well, per the details of her original Capitol Records contract, she never owned the master rights for the song, which was her first Billboard hit (it peaked at No. 25). Meanwhile, the song’s writer, Gary White, will still see his share coming in, for which Ronstadt expressed gratitude: “I still love the song and I’m very glad that Gary will get a windfall,” she said.

Besides, even if she had owned them, in 2021, she joined the slew of legacy artists who sold their master recording ownership rights, meaning Iconic Artist Group. The trend of artists selling their catalogs has swept the industry, consolidating much of music ownership with a handful of investment groups — for better or worse.

Ronstadt doesn’t feel like she missed out, though. According to her manager, the surge of interest will help her upcoming work, such as a planned biopic with James Keach, and her books, the most recent of which was released late last year.

Drake Has An Idea About Spotify Giving Bonuses To ‘Motivate’ Artists, But It Might Just Mostly Benefit Major Players Like Himself

Music fans love Spotify, as they’ve made it the most-used music streaming platform in the world. Artists, though, often have mixed feelings about it, mostly due to the platform’s often-criticized payment rates. Now, Drake has come up with an idea to inspire other artists on the streaming front.

In an Instagram Story posted last night (February 1), Drake shared a news story about being the first artist to pass 75 billion streams on the platform. He also wrote, “We should get bonuses like athletes to motivate the future artists to be consistent and competitive…so feel free to send me a Lebron sized cheque I have enough dinner plates [crying laughing emoji] [heart emoji] @spotify.”

That’s certainly an idea. While Drake would certainly benefit from an arrangement like that since he’s one of the platform’s most successful artists, it’s hard to envision a world where rolling out a system like what he described wouldn’t lead to backlash from smaller artists, sitting on the sidelines as they watch the rich get richer.

Indeed, Spotify has helped make Drake rich: In 2021, it was estimated that Drake had earned over $52 million in Spotify royalties thanks to 21.5 billion streams. Given that he has many more plays than that now, he’s likely earned much more than that estimate.

When Will Tickets For Beyoncé’s 2023 Tour Go On Sale?

No one can break Beyoncé’s soul, but the Beyhive can certainly break the internet. Upon the announcement of her upcoming Renaissance World Tour, fans crashed the Citi Entertainment site, which revealed the guidelines on how to register for the pre-sale.

When will tickets for Beyoncé’s 2023 tour go on sale?

The Citi pre-sale link is now active again, and fans can begin registering to receive their pre-sale codes now.

The pre-sale is powered by a program called Verified Fan, in which fans can register to potentially be invited to purchase pre-sale tickets. Registering, however, will not guarantee each fan will be verified, receive a code, or have the ability to purchase tickets.

Those who are invited will receive an access code the night before the Citi presale inviting them to shop for tickets.

According to Citi Entertainment’s website, “Registration for the Citi presale powered by Verified Fan in Chicago, East Rutherford, Washington DC, Atlanta, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Houston will go through Thursday, February 2 at 11:59 PM EST. Verified fans will be notified and the Citi presale will begin Tuesday, February 7, 2023 at 10 AM EST through Wednesday, February 8, 2023 at 6 PM EST.”

The following week, “Verified Fan in Minneapolis, Boston, Tampa, Miami, San Francisco, Seattle and Dallas will go through Thursday, February 9, 2023 at 11:59 PM EST.”

At the time of writing, registration is only available to those with a Citi credit card. It is unclear when general on-sale will begin, however, non-Citi cardholders will be able to purchase tickets here.

Donald Glover’s Next Show Is Inspired By Beyoncé, The Beyhive, And The Dark Side Of Standom

Now that Atlanta is all wrapped up, Donald Glover is setting his sights on another aspect of the recording industry: The dark side of standom. According to Vanity Fair, Glover’s next television project, Swarm, is inspired by Beyoncé and her infamous Beyhive.

The Hive has been one of the most notorious and feared fan groups in music for some time; critics and casuals alike must be wary of insulting Queen Bey (even unintentionally), lest they incur the wrath of her thousands of defensive, chronically-online stans. Not even Nicole Curran, the wife of the Golden State Warriors co-owner, was safe when she got a little too close to Jay-Z for comfort.

Glover’s new project will scrutinize stan culture through the story of Dre (portrayed by Dominique Fishback), whose obsession with a pop star (who is apparently very inspired by Beyoncé) takes her to some dark places, judging from the screenshots provided by Vanity Fair. Ironically, Dre’s sister will be played by Chloe Bailey — who is best known as one-half of sister duo Chloe X Halle and signed to Beyonce’s label, Parkwood. Meanwhile, Dre’s love interest will be played by Damson Idris, of Snowfall fame.

The show will be executive produced by Atlanta writer Janine Nabors and will stream on Amazon Prime Video.

The Weeknd And Tate McRae Lead The 2023 Juno Awards Nominations

While the next week will rightfully see plenty of focus on the upcoming Grammy Awards, our neighbors up north have announced the nominees for their equivalent, the Junos. Sorry Canadians, but “Canadian Grammys” is pretty much the most convenient metaphor to get Americans to grasp the importance of the Junos — blame G.W. Bush.

The field is led (again) this year by Canada’s number-one pop export, The Weeknd, who’s nominated for Album Of The Year, Artist Of The Year, Pop Album Of The Year, Juno Fan Choice, Single Of The Year for “Sacrifice,” and Songwriter Of The Year awards. Meanwhile, resurgent rocker Avril Lavigne and pop neophyte Tate McRae follow with five apiece. They’re followed by Preston Pablo and The Reklaws, with three nominations each.

Lavigne’s nominations include Juno Fan Choice, Single Of The Year (“Bite Me”), Album Of The Year, Artist Of The Year, and Pop Album Of The Year. McRae is up for the same awards, with “She’s All I Wanna Be” nominated for Single Of The Year.

The Junos will be held on March 13 and broadcast live from Rogers Place in Edmonton on CBC Television, hosted by back-to-back emcee Simu Liu. You can check out the full list of nominees on JunoAwards.CA.

Some artists covered here are Warner Music artists. Uproxx is an independent subsidiary of Warner Music Group.
