California just made it harder to use rap lyrics as criminal evidence.

California has become the first state to restrict the use of creative expression in a criminal proceeding, and artists and free speech advocates are hoping that more states and the federal government will follow suit.

Prosecutors have contended that lyrics sometimes contain open confessions to crimes, while critics argue that the evidence unfairly targets people of color, as rappers’ songs — which are often figurative — can embrace themes of criminality and violence.

“No other music genre, no other art genre gets thrown in people’s faces like that, and can drag them into court or put them in jail,” Chessie Thacher, a senior ACLU staff attorney, told Yahoo News.

“Most rappers are Black men or Latino men, or men from low-income backgrounds. And that’s completely unacceptable. It’s obviously a racial justice issue,” said Rep. Jamaal Bowman, D-N.Y.

Wiz Khalifa Dissed And Threatened To Fight Two DJs In Los Angeles While Calling Them ‘Horrible DJs’

This weekend was supposed to be a celebratory one for Wiz Khalifa. That’s because the rapper just released his sixth album Multiverse, a project that is his first official album since 2018’s Rolling Paper 2. Since that 2018 effort, Wiz has shared numerous projects like collaborative efforts with Currensy and Juicy J and mixtapes like 2019’s Fly Times, Vol.1: The Good Fly Young and 2020’s Big Pimpin. As for his latest release, Multiverse checks in at 17 songs with features from They. and Girl Talk. This expected celebratory mood for Wiz quickly changed during a Los Angeles show where the rapper was seen dissing and threatening a pair of DJs.

It all went down during a show at the Poppy Nightclub in Los Angeles. The video does not show was sparked Wiz’s rant, but it does make it clear that DJ Mike Danger and MC Tron were the targets of Wiz’s wrath. “B*tch ass n****, if you wanna fight, n**** we can do it,” Wiz says at the start of the video. “Y’all n****s suck, don’t hug me b*tch. Y’all n****s suck, play my new sh*t n****, play it n****, play ‘Bad Ass B*tches.’ Y’all are horrible DJs.”

Wiz did not stop there. He continued, “I came here tonight to promote for y’all and have a good ass time and have a great time, but you know what I’m not gonna do? I’m not gonna sit here and let these hoe ass n****s act like this sh*t is acceptable. I’m a real ass n**** dawg, my album just came out today. My album just came out today, play my new sh*t dawg.”

The video concludes with Wiz pushing someone away from him onstage, saying, “Get out the way, I don’t like you dawg,” before he returns to performing. To make matters worse, he also took two individuals’ hats and threw them into the crowd.

Bad Bunny’s ‘Un Verano Sin Ti’ Extends Its Impressive ‘Billboard’ 200 Run With Another Week At No. 1

Bad Bunny’s Un Verano Sin Ti ended the month of July with a unique accomplishment. The final update of the Billboard 200 chart revealed that the album was the first since Adele’s 25 to register 11 or more consecutive weeks of 100,000 or more album sales. Shortly after, Un Verano Sin Ti went on to become the most popular album of 2022 after it passed the soundtrack for Encanto to become the most popular album of the year. Prior to this weekend, it had earned 1.606 million equivalent album units in the US, passing the mark of 1.565 million units that Encanto. That lead will only be extended at Un Verano Sin Ti logged another week at No. 1.

For the Billboard 200 chart dated August 6, 2022, Bad Bunny’s Un Verano Sin Ti sold 98,000 copies in the past week. That number is comprised of mostly streams as it put forth 97,000 streaming equivalent album units thanks to 135.9 million on-demand official streams of the album’s tracks. This past week marks the first time since the album’s release that it did not sell 100,000 or more copies, bringing its consecutive streak to an end at 11.

However, in maintaining its No. 1 position, Un Verano Sin Ti logged its 12th straight week within the top two positions on the Billboard 200. The last album to achieve this was Drake’s Views in 2016 which put forth 17 straight weeks within the top two positions on the Billboard 200. With Beyonce’s Renaissane expected to make its debut at No. 1 next week, it remains to be seen if Bad Bunny can hold on to No. 2 in order to keep the streak alive.

Lil Durk Will ‘Take A Break & Focus On My Health’ After A Pyrotechnic Went Off In His Face At Lollapalooza

Lil Durk is in the middle of a phenomenal year. He released his seventh album 7220 at the top of the year. That project arrived with 18 songs and features from Gunna, Future, Summer Walker, and Morgan Wallen and went on to become Durk’s first solo No. 1 album. He later extended the project with 12 additional songs with help from Moneybagg Yo, EST Gee, Doodie Lo, Ella Mai, and A Boogie Wit Da Boogie. It’s this album, and previously released efforts from his discography, that Lil Durk brought for a performance at Lollapalooza. His set was going well for the most part, until a scary incident occurred on stage.

During his Lollapalooza set, Lil Durk was walking on stage when one of the onstage pyrotechnics went off in his face. This caused Durk to stumble backward as he held his hands to his eye after he was struck in the face by smoke. After a brief moment, Durk returned to performing as he was seemingly okay after the incident. However, he took to Instagram afterward for an update with fans.

“Due to the incident that happened at Lollapalooza in Chicago on stage, I’ma take a break & focus on my health,” Durk wrote with a picture of his right eye in a bandage. “I finished my performance yesterday for my fans. Appreciate y’all.”

You can watch the Lollapalooza incident and see the post from Durk above.

Chance The Rapper Believes A Video Of Kanye West Yelling At Him Was Wrongfully ‘Exploited’ By Others

Chance The Rapper and Kanye West began heavily collaborating with each other back in 2016 as Chance had a huge presence on Kanye’s seventh album The Life Of Pablo. Chance had writing credits on multiple songs including, “Ultralight Beam,” “Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 1,” “Famous,” and more. From then on, Chance and Kanye’s relationship would cool off a bit, mainly due to political disagreements. Despite this, things seemed to be okay between the two rappers, until at the top of 2021 when a video of Kanye yelling at Chance surfaced on social media.

    https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

The video, which was reportedly from a documentary for Kanye’s Donda album, captures Kanye growing increasingly agitated with Chance during a conversation. One thing led to another and Kanye tells Chance to sit his “ass down and listen to the album or leave.” Eighteen months after that video surfaced, Chance finally addressed it during an interview on The Morning Hustle. He described it as a clip from “a larger moment, like no one’s ever gonna get the full story of what’s going on.”

Chance continued, “I saw people put fake captions under the video to make it look like he was talking about my music or something like that. But in all honesty, this is real life. I have real friends and they go through real problems.” He went on to speak about his true intentions for visiting Kanye at the time and how he felt about people’s reactions to the clip.

“I did come out there to check on my friend,” he said. “Me and a lot of other people still have love for Ye. But he’s human, he’s not perfect. He was obviously going through it at that time … It made me evaluate my friendship with him, for sure. I had never been so close to him going through an episode.” He added, “At the end of the day, I definitely love the dude. That’s my guy. It sucks that sometimes people can exploit a moment that is a genuine moment.”

You can revisit the clip in question and watch Chance’s interview on The Morning Hustle above.

ASAP Bari Says Playboi Carti Finessed Him Out Of Credits And Payment For ‘Go2daMoon’

In an ideal world, people will always receive credit for the things they do especially when someone else benefits. Unfortunately, the music industry is anything but an ideal world. Though there are proper platforms for songwriters, engineers, and other contributors to be given their acknowledgment, that process is often bypassed. Just this week, Kelis took issue with Beyoncé sampling her on Renaissance without reaching out to her, and now we see ASAP Bari has a similar issue with Playboi Carti.

    https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

Yesterday (July 29), Bari took to Instagram story to call out Carti for not crediting him or paying him for “Go2DaMoon” featuring Kanye West. Evidently, the ASAP Mob member played the song for Carti around the time Whole Lotta Red was being made.

“When you play Carti a Kanye song you had in ur phone produce by @wheezy,” Bari said over a clip of Carti listening to the song. “Even tho Carti never paid me or gave me Credit on the album but that go’s to a lot of rapper I’ve helped out but never got Credit for.”

Though this is yet another unfortunate situation commonplace to the music industry, Bari is still in good spirits as Kanye West recently gifted him a brand new Maybach truck days after he wrecked his previous vehicle.
