Hip-hop’s relationship with anime [DISCUSSION]

Today, hip-hop and anime have a deep connection. Many anime series feature hip-hop music extensively, and countless contemporary rappers have bars referencing anime and manga (Denzel Curry, Logic, XXXTentacion, Lil Uzi Vert, Lil Peep, and many more). After an explosion in anime references around the 2010s, anime’s presence in hip-hop is undeniable today. While the history of this cultural exchange surely runs deeper than the timeline offered here, I have compiled a brief history of the intersection between rap and manga/anime.

Though ’90s rap may be broadly characterized by the mafioso themes of gangsta rap, hip-hop’s relationship with anime seems to begin around this time.

In February of 1996, The Boondocks comic strip began publication on Hitlist.com, with a visual style heavily influenced by creator Aaron McGruber’s love of manga. The series was later serialized in the hip-hop magazine The Source.

Later that year, Ghostface Killah of the Wu-Tang Clan released a video for his single Daytona 500 comprised of clips from the 1967-1968 anime Speed Racer.

In 1998, manga artist Takashi Okazaki created the manga Afro Samurai, inspired by his love of hip-hop and soul music. Much further down the road, RZA of the Wu-Tang Clan would record the soundtrack for Afro Samurai‘s anime adaptation in 2007.

It wasn’t until the early 2000s that anime references began appearing in rap lyrics. In 2001, RZA of the Wu-Tang Clan released Must Be Bobby off the LP Digital Bullet, where he raps “Sit in the sun six hours then I charge up like Goku / Dragonball Z; imagine you’re raggin me”. This may be one of rap’s earliest direct anime references.

Anime references remained pretty rare throughout the early aughts. In 2005, Lupe Fiasco featured on Kanye’s Touch the Sky and spit the line “Lupe steal like Lupin the 3rd”, referencing the manga series Lupin III. Lupe later reiterated his love of manga on his 2007 LP The Cool, with the line “I like Goyard bags and green Now & Laters / Monocle magazine and Japanese manga” from the track Gold Watch.

Also in 2007, Kanye West released Stronger. The video for the song, directed by Hype Williams, drew imagery from the 1988 anime film Akira. Kanye later tweeted expressing his love for Akira.

In 2008, B.O.B. referenced Dragon Ball Z in his song Autotune with the line “When I’m on the mic I’m blazing / Man who am I? Just like a Super Saiyan”. In 2010, Soulja Boy released a song titled Goku, predictably filled with DBZ references.

In the early 2010s, anime references in hip-hop exploded, particularly regarding Dragon Ball Z. On Machine Gun Kelly’s 2011 song Wild Boy, Wacka Flocka Flame raps “Suck my dragon balls, bitch, call me Goku”. Jay Rock’s 2011 song Hood Gone Love It features the line “Comin’ down in an old school, so cool / Whip like a fire ball, call it Goku”.

From there on, the bars are innumerable and I won’t waste time digging through every Domo Genesis or Frank song where he says Goku. Thanks for reading, and if anyone has anything to add, especially regarding any 1990s rap anime references I missed, I’d love to see them and update the write-up.

‘Call of Duty: WWII’ is the next free PS Plus game, and it arrives tomorrow

Perhaps bearing in mind that many PS4 players are looking for more ways to kill time until The Last of Us Part II finally dropsnext month, Sony is releasing its next free PS Plus title a bit early. And it’s a pretty big one — subscribers can snag Call of Duty: WWII at no extra cost starting tomorrow.

The company caught some flak for its May lineup of Cities: Skylines and Farming Simulator 19, so adding a major title into the mix might sate some critics from last time around. It’s not the first Call of Duty game to be a PS Plus freebie either. Sony’s given away Black Ops III and Modern Warfare Remastered over the last couple of years.
Sony usually refreshes its free PS Plus games on the first Tuesday of the month, so the latest addition is arriving a week earlier than usual. CoD: WWII won’t be the only freebie in June. Sony will reveal the rest of the month’s slate later this week.

Find wheelchair accessible places with Google Maps

Editor’s note: Today is Global Accessibility Awareness Day, and we’ll be sharing resources and tools for education, as well as accessibility features and updates for Android and Google Maps.
Imagine making plans to go somewhere new, taking the journey to get there and arriving— only to be stuck outside, prevented from sitting with family or being unable to access the restroom. It’s a deeply frustrating experience I’ve had many times since becoming a wheelchair user in 2009. And it’s an experience all too familiar to the 130 million wheelchair usersworldwide and the more than 30 million Americans who have difficulty using stairs.
So imagine instead being able to “know before you go” whether a destination is wheelchair accessible, just as effortlessly as looking up the address. In recognition of Global Accessibility Awareness Day, we’re announcing a new Google Maps feature that does just that.
People can now turn on an “Accessible Places” feature to have wheelchair accessibility information more prominently displayed in Google Maps. When Accessible Places is switched on, a wheelchair icon will indicate an accessible entrance and you’ll be able to see if a place has accessible seating, restrooms or parking. If it’s confirmed that a place does not have an accessible entrance, we’ll show that information on Maps as well.

Better maps for everyone, whether you walk or roll

Today, Google Maps has wheelchair accessibility information for more than 15 million places around the world. That number has more than doubled since 2017 thanks to the dedication of more than 120 million Local Guidesand others who’ve responded to our call to share accessibility information. In total, this community has contributed more than 500 million wheelchair accessibility updates to Google Maps. Store owners have also helped, using Google My Business to add accessibility information for their business profiles to help users needing stair-free access find them on Google Maps and Search.

With this feature “rollout”, it’s easier to find and contribute wheelchair accessibility information to Google Maps. That benefits everyone, from those of us using wheelchairs and parents pushing strollers to older adults with tired legs and people hauling heavy items. And in this time of COVID-19, it’s especially important to know before you go so that you won’t be stranded outside that pharmacy, grocery or restaurant.

How to contribute accessibility information to Google Maps
Anyone can contribute accessibility information to Google Maps
To get wheelchair accessibility information more prominently displayed in Google Maps, update your app to the latest version, go to Settings, select “Accessibility,” and turn on “Accessible Places.” The feature is available on both Android and iOS.
We’re also rolling out an update that allows people using iOS devices to more easily contribute accessibility information, joining the millions of Android users who have been sharing this type of information on Maps. This guide has tips for rating accessibility, in case you’re not sure what counts as being “accessible.” We invite everyone to switch on Accessible Places and contribute accessibility information to help people in your community.

A Maps milestone, built on a movement

This launch is a milestone in our journey to build a better, more helpful map for everyone, which includes recent efforts to help people find accessible placestransit routes and walking directions. Our work wouldn’t be possible without the decades of advocacy from those who have fought for equal access for people with disabilities. Were it not for them, there would be far fewer accessible places for Google Maps to show.
The Accessible Places feature is starting to rollout for Google Maps users in Australia, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States, with support for additional countries on the way.

How to turn on Accessible Places
Use the Accessible Places feature to see accessibility information more prominently displayed in Google Maps
